Your sump pump is protecting your home and keeping it from water damage or flooding. A flood can cost thousands of dollars in damage, ruining not only your carpets, flooring, and furniture, but also potentially destroying items that aren't replaceable such as photographs and keepsakes. And most insurance policies do not cover flood damage, so flooding can be very costly to you.
Sump pumps can fail. If your pump runs on electricity, what happens when the power goes out? Your sump pump also stops working during the power outage. Power outages typically occur in extreme weather conditions such as heavy thunderstorms with lightening. If there is an extended power outage during such a storm you are more than likely to experience an overflowing sump and a flooded basement.
Sump pumps can also fail for other reasons, some of them preventable, and some of them not. Average sump pump life is seven to eight years, although they can run for up to fifteen or twenty years. Some have been known to fail after just a year or two. But when it reaches its limit you have no warning. Your pump may also fail due to debris or a rock jamming the impeller. In short, you can't predict exactly if your sump pump will work or when it will experience failure.
Looking for a water powered sump pump and other resources?
A sump pump backup system can give you peace of mind. You don't want to have to worry about the power going out or whether your sump pump will stop working while you're away on vacation. The backup system allows you to know that if one system fails, the other will be there to take up the slack. It is an inexpensive way to protect your home.
A backup sump pump system can be either water powered or battery powered. Either one will help protect your home from any potential water problems. Battery powered backups will run from several hours to only a few minutes depending on the age of the battery. The water powered system will operate for an unlimited time since it doesn't require batteries, which gives it a definite advantage.
One other option that may appeal to you is a backup power generator system. There are both manually operated generators, for which you must be present to utilize, and automatic natural gas powered generators which will kick in whether you are present or not. Automatic backup generators are quite expensive, about $8,000 installed, and still cannot cover you in case of a mechanical pump failure, since it is only tripped on by a general power failure.
Because sump pumps are out of sight, homeowners normally do not replace them or test them periodically. Unfortunately, we generally do not know they have failed until we see water in the basement. For that reason, if your home presently has a sump pump, it is definitely worth considering having a sump pump backup system installed.
